Fawley hosted the Kenilworth Wardens in a touring game on Thursday (26th June).
Led by Wayne Smith, who won the toss, Fawley batted first.
The Fawley innings was surprisingly opened by Painter and Rice, not the normal combination to set the score racing. However they both played some attacking strokes and ran well between the wickets. Rice was dropped twice in two balls and avoided the hat trick with a sound forward defensive. He was the first to be dismissed for 28 which started the fall of a flurry of wickets. Painter became the first of a numer of dubious lbw decisions.
Fawley soon found themselves 5 wickets down and at this point Kev McCarthy was brought onto bowl for Kenilworth. He proceeded to take the wickets of Parratt, Streather and Morgan (first ball) before ending the innings of Sturgess senior who had batted well to give some respectability to the Fawley innings.
Kev was denied a 5 wicket haul when Rollinson (who had also batted well to this point) ran out skipper Smith and Fawley ended on 157.
In reply Morgan opened the bowling and brought back memories of the Bramshaw game with a series of wides and boundary balls. He put this down to too much tea but it was too much for wicketkeeper Sturgess junior who claimed to have a broken finger and was substituted.
Skipper Smith tried numerous bowling options in order to get a break through and despite the veterans Rollinson, Streather, Sturgess senior and Parratt all turning their arm over Kenilworth strolled to victory with overs and wickets to spare. McCarthy had left already but has asked for the match ball as a trophy.
It was a well contested game despite the howling gale and we hope Kenilworth will come back next year.
